Performing Spatial Sound using Parat+

This one-hour workshop explores the use of an integrated framework for the live performance of simultaneous spectral, temporal and spatial sound manipulation, including a hands-on exploration for workshop participants of a new faderbox app for iOS, Parat+.

Parat+ allows the simple reconfiguration, recording and looping of fader movements using multi-touch gestures without leaving the main fader interface. It is designed by and for performing electronic musicians that want to be able to reconfigure, remap, record and loop fader gestures intuitively whilst playing. Faders can be controlled directly by sound into the iPad mic with gating and threshold, one-flick record and loop, two-finger remapping of fader range, and three-finger readjustment of curvature of response, allowing gestures and shapes to be re-scaled, augmented, paused, interrupted and over-ridden.

Parat+ also offers a rotary spatial sound controller designed for panning and diffusing simultaneous layers of sound into ambisonic and binaural playback environments, turning Parat+ into a powerful real-time spatial sound manipulation tool. Parat+ is developed by Incalcando (http://incalcando.com), with additional spatial sound controllers developed in collaboration with the University of Glasgow.
